Let’s discuss first ‘S’ of 5S!

First ‘S’ in ‘5S for meditating managers’ is Shanti. It simply means ‘Mental Peace’.

The main reason for less productivity or low performance of most of the managers is lack of mental peace.
What kills mental peace? Is it restlessness, anxiety, insecurities! If yes then where do these things come from?

If we dig into ourselves then we’ll realize that it comes from our unrealistic expectations- from self and others; it comes from lack of visibility of future and it comes from our fears & worries!

Let’s make an attempt to understand it! We end up worrying about something which is imaginary in nature, something which has not happened yet! Our mind plays these tricks with us. It creates virtual world around us which projects possible failures, disappointments, loses and it manifests into tensions and stress in real life.

You must be recollecting a strory from our childhood. There was a rabbit in the jungle. Once a dry leaf from a tree dropped on his back; He got so scared that without looking at what has actually fallen on his back, he started running and shouting “Sky is falling! Run! Sky is falling!”

His panic, his fear was so strong that other animals who met him on road also started running with the same fear of falling sky. Please note that fear is contagious. It spreads faster through weak hearts!

In work environments, we may notice such rabbits around us. It could be our seniors, our peers or even our subordinates! They will simply blow the issues out of the proportion, without understanding the importance of it.

Their behavior starts putting unnecessary pressure on us. It starts killing our ‘Mental peace’. Many a times, our behavior is also like those animals which met rabbit on the way. Without giving a second thought, we join the running herd. We get easily infected with fear!

Take a pause and think! Should my life be based on the emotional swings of others or should it be based on my own realization! The moment we have this realization, we will not get disturbed by other’s behavior! This is a first step to attain Shanti at workplace!

Another dimension of achieving Shanti (i.e mental peace) depends on how we have worked with our own mind. Our conditioning, nurturing, values systems and our beliefs fall in this bucket.

It depends on how our mind has shaped up over a time period!
Remember, Mind has a bad habit. It likes to keep itself occupied, it likes to keep itself engaged & busy. If it doesn’t get something ‘Good’ then it will occupy itself with something ‘Bad’!

You may see many managers around you who are busy doing nothing. The only reason is they have conditioned their mind to stay busy. The busiest managers may not be the most productive managers!

Are you one of them? If yes then your peace of mind is at stake.
Your mind needs rest. Try to break this unnecessary engagement of the mind. Learn to free your mind from thoughts!
Until and unless it is free, it won’t relax. Until & unless it is occupied, it won’t relax!

You may see many managers take yearly offs to relax but ironically they are more occupied when they are holidaying!
The whole purpose of ‘break from the work’ is defeated because they are still working in Holidays. Form of the work might have changed but their mind is still occupied!
No need to wait for yearly holidays or long weekends. Spend at least half an hour a day seating relaxed at cool and calm place.

Do not rush to meditate! There is still time to do that! First and foremost learn to relax. 
Relax your body… that is easier! Once you do that, slowly you will observe that your mind is also relaxing! It will help you to sharpen the focus; it will help to become more productive, it will help you to achieve your goals, easily!

Give this much needed break to your mind! And you will see that mental peace is flowing in, Shanti is flowing in!
