Pay attention to the roots…

If you belong to a society where people break rules, break queues, break traffic signals, break protocols then expecting them to follow rules & regulations, processes & procedures in the organization is an unrealistic expectation!

Ultimately, people working in the organization emerge from the society around you. Hence, it is obvious that whatever your society practices that will be reflected in your organization. Organizations are mirrors of the society!

If your society is disciplined, value driven; then your organization needs not to preach it to its employees. It will be an obvious nature of your employees to be disciplined and value driven.

If people are particular about hygiene and cleanliness at their homes then no one is required to tell them to practice same at office.

If people practice honesty & integrity in their personal lives then same will reflect in their professional lives as well!

If people respect their family, elders & even juniors then they will demonstrate the same behavior with their teams.

However, If your society is full of indiscipline, full of hypocrisy, full of artificial behavior then what else can you expect in your organizations?

The values like respect, honesty, trust cannot be taught in a classroom. These are not the skills which one need acquire. Rather, these are the ingredients of your personality, your character!

Hence, those you are involved in leadership building; those who are willing to lead; those who are in search of tomorrow’s leaders, shall pay attention to the society.

They shall work at the root level. Values can not be taught in the organizations. Those are practiced in the organizations. Teaching shall happen from childhood. Do not ignore this thought saying that what kids will understand about values? That is the biggest mistake most of the societies have done so far.

Kids, who have just begun their education, are the right set of audiences to preach values. Today’s managers, coaches, mentors are wasting their time in B-Schools. They should be spending more time at kindergarten, primary schools. That is a right place to water!

Talk to kids about honesty, trust, respect and other crucial values. Encourage them to practice it at school, home and in society. As a result of this nurturing, you will observe that organizations will yield a better crop of managers in the next generation.

As a part of social responsibility, every organization, every manager shall get connected to one or the other primary school. You will unlearn and re-learn many things by going back to school! While preaching values to kids, you will start evaluating your own behavior in the organization. I bet you, it will transform your personality as well!

Every organization works for the profitability through ethical business practices. Every organization invests in the (wo)men, machines & methods. If every organization get connected to kids at the schools then that would be one of the most wise and fruitful investment of that organization!
